The Russian Academy of Regional Press Sciences unites leading researchers and practitioners in the field of journalism. For 27 years, it has been a recognized center of scholarly thought studying regional media. Membership in the Academy is selective and signifies high professional recognition.
Galina Shcherbakova is the author of over 170 published works, including textbooks, monographs, and scholarly articles. Her research, dedicated to the history of Russian journalism, particularly the development of regional press and the formation of sections such as "Regional News" in newspapers like Grazhdanin, Syn Otechestva, and Russkie Vedomosti, is widely published in authoritative scholarly collections across Russia. In collaboration with the Togliatti society Chernobyl Veterans, she prepared and published two documentary collections: The Atomic Age in the Fates of Togliatti Residents and The Atomic Age in the Fates of Togliatti Residents: Widows of Chernobyl. In both cases, she coordinated the work of a student creative group involved in implementing the project.
“The Russian Academy of Regional Press Sciences comprises very distinguished individuals, renowned journalism researchers in our country, and it is a great honor for me to stand alongside them,” says Galina Shcherbakova. “Any step upward entails not so much opportunities as responsibilities. But I do not intend to slow down; I will continue to work hard: writing articles, speaking at conferences. I spoke in St. Petersburg in September, will speak in Saratov on October 22, and in Voronezh in mid-November. I have also received an invitation from Yekaterinburg. I believe one must carefully observe life, the press, social networks, and strive to grasp what is happening, why, and where it will lead. The words of Lev Efremovich Kroychik (literary critic), now deceased, one of the founders of the Voronezh school of journalism, are significant to me; he remarked with surprise that I manage to find something new in what seemed, at first glance, well-known. I do not know how this happens, but I will be glad if I manage to find something else new or previously unnoticed.”
In addition to historical research, the professor's scientific interests encompass issues of journalistic professional ethics – a textbook on this subject was published last year – as well as the specifics of interaction between fan movements and sports journalism.
“The election of Galina Shcherbakova as a full member of the Academy confirms the high level of TSU's scientific school and strengthens the university's position as one of the leading centers for media education and research in the field of communications. It is gratifying that Professor Shcherbakova’s merits and her achievements in the field of journalism history and journalistic ethics have received such high recognition from her colleagues,” commented Olga Parshina, Head of the Department of Philology, Media Communications, and Linguistic Expertise at TSU.
