Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences


Honored Worker of Higher Professional Education of the Russian Federation.

Born in 1969. In 1991, he graduated from Togliatti Polytechnic Institute with honours, and during 1989-1991 he was a holder of the Lenin Scholarship. In 1994, he defended his Candidate of Sciences degree dissertation (Ph.D. dissertation) in physical and mathematical sciences at Samara State Technical University.22


Over 10 years (since 1995) of work at the NTC Research Center of JSC AVTOVAZ, he had built a successful career from a research engineer of the 2nd category to a deputy director of a major research department.


In 2003, Mikhail Krishtal defended his Doctoral dissertation in physical and mathematical sciences at Baikov Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Science, RAS obtaining a Doctor of Sciences degree at 33 years old. In 2010, he was awarded a professor title at the Nanotechnologies and New Materials Department. 


In 1999–2000, he also completed on-the-job “Management” course within the Presidential Programme of High Management Training for Russian national industrial organisations. 


Since 2003, Mikhail Krishtal has worked as a professor at TSU; and from 2005 to 2009 – as the TSU Vice-Rector for Research and Development Work. 

On 26 June 2009, he was elected the Rector of Togliatti State University. 

On 24 June 2014 – re-elected as the Rector by majority of voices, and later, on 16 July 2014, he was approved in this capacity by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.


On Mikhail Krishtal’s initiative, an innovative infrastructure of TSU was created, including (as at beginning of 2014):

– Research and Development Institute of Advanced Technologies

– Testing Centre

– Innovation and Technologies Centre

– Technology Transfer Centre

– 17 research and education centres

– 26 small innovative enterprises 


The number of research and development works in 2011 reached 20 % of the total TSU budget. TSU won three government mega-grants to carry out the projects under the Government Decrees No.219 and No.220 dated 09.04.2010 to be implemented during 2010-2013, which allowed to purchase state-of-the-art equipment that cost over 200 million rubles.


In 2010, the Academic Council approved the Development Strategy of Togliatti State University. In 2014, under his leadership the Development Strategy of Togliatti State University up to 2020 was devised and sanctioned, at the same time, the TSU Campus Development Concept was adopted and its modernisation commenced.


In 2010, TSU won the Russian Government Award for Quality; and in 2012, the Economic Council of the CIS awarded TSU the Recognition of Business Perfection prize for outstanding results in delivering quality products and services.


In 2012, TSU was granted the status of a Federal Innovative Platform for the period from 2012 to 2017.


Three times (autumn 2012, autumn 2013, and spring 2014) Togliatti State University was listed as an effective university by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.


In 2013, TSU successfully passed the State Accreditation for Bachelor, Master’s and doctoral programmes for the following six years.


In 2017, the Russian Ministry of Education and Science carried out a second round of competitive selection among development programmes of flagship universities that have a key role in industrial, social and economic growth of the Russian Federation territorial entities. The development programme of TSU as a flagship university that was devised under M. Krishtal’s leadership and supported by the State Duma deputies, by the Government of Samara Region, and by the heads of major industrial, research, and social organisations, won the competition. On 17 April 2017, Togliatti State University obtained the status of a regional flagship university.

Moreover, according to the results of a high-priority competition of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science, in 2017, TSU was recognised as a university centre for innovative, technological and social development of the region implementing the Flagship University Development Programme and the Programme of TSU Transformation into an Innovative and Technological Development Centre of Samara Region. Both of the programmes are approved by the Government of Samara Region and supported by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.


Under Mikhail Krishtal’s management, the partnership between TSU and JSC “AVTOVAZ” reached a new level. In 2011, TSU was included into the Programme of Innovative Development of AVTOVAZ according to which, in 2012, a joint scientific and technical committee was created together with AVTOVAZ specialists. On 1 March 2012, the JSC AVTOVAZ President Igor Komarov and the TSU Rector Mikhail Krishtal signed an agreement on targeted professional training for students. On 30 May 2017, the university represented by M.M. Krishtal and the car plant represented by Nicolas Maure entered into a general agreement on cooperation on targeted staff training. In 2018–2019, 155 TSU students will undergo such training for AVTOVAZ.


In 2008, on Mikhail Krishtal’s initiative, a new scientific journal “Vektor Nauki of Togliatti State University” was established with the Rector being its Editor-in-Chief. In 2010, “Vektor Nauki TSU” was listed by the Higher Attestation Committee as approved for publishing research papers of candidates for academic degrees.

In 2010, “Vektor Nauki TSU. Series: Pedagogy and Psychology”, “Vektor Nauki TSU. Series: Legal Studies”, and “Vektor Nauki TSU. Series: Economics and Management” were established.

M.M. Krishtal is a member of the Editorial Board of several major scientific journals: “Metallurgy and Thermal Processing of Metals” from 2005, and “Deformation and Destruction of Materials” in 2009.

Mikhail Krishtal is an author and co-author of over 200 research papers mainly in physics of strength and plasticity (including three monographs approved by the Academic Methodological Association for Metallurgy Education as training materials for students enrolled in “Metallurgy” and “Material Physics”), as well as 20 patents for inventions and utility models.

As at the beginning of 2014, the number of publications by Mikhail Krishtal registered in the Russian Science Citation Index (RSCI) was 113, total number of quotations – 402, h-index – 12.

Starting from 2005, under M. Krishtal’s leadership, in TSU and in small innovative enterprises, there were implemented 22 works funded by grants, federal and regional programmes, and works carried out under business contracts (including the Presidential Grant “To Young Doctors of Sciences”, three grants of the Russian Foundation of Fundamental Research, and the Departmental Special-Purpose Analytical Programme of the Rosobrazovanie) worth over 49 million rubles in total; two Ph.D. dissertations and one doctor dissertation were defended.


Mikhail M. Krishtal is involved in extensive social work:

– Since 2009, M. Krishtal has been the Head of Togliatti Regional Office of the Social Organisation “Association of Engineer Education of Russia”.

– In summer 2012, by the invitation of the Deputy Chairman of the Russian Government and the Head of the Military-Industrial Commission Dmitry Rogozin, the Rector of TSU joined the Public Council (since 2013 – Expert Council) of the Head of the Military-Industrial Commission under the Russian Government.

– Four times he has been elected as the Head of Sergei Zhilkin Charity Fund for Social and Cultural Development of Togliatti “Dukhovnoe Nasledie” (since 2011), in affiliation with which a special TSU Development Fund was established with TSU endowment of 10 million rubles (as at the beginning of 2014). The amount received by “TSU Development Fund” totaled 14,680,000 rubles as at the beginning of 2014.

– In 2012, M. Krishtal was elected to join the Presidium of the Rectors Council of Samara Region.

– Since 2015, M. Krishtal is a Deputy Chairman of “Mechanical Engineering” Section of the Science and Technology Council under the Governor of Samara Region.
