In March the project “Privolzhsky Cluster University “Automotive Industry” initiated by TSU was launched. Apart from Togliatti State University there were other major technical education institutions of the Volga region that joined the project.

In spring the first Professional Skills Contest for the University Professors and Lecturers initiated by the Togliatti State University Employee Development Center took place at the University.

In May two student performing groups won the first awards in the National Student Art Festival “Russian Student Spring”.

In the end of May Togliatti State University was visited by Anne Pringle, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland to Russia.

In the beginning of summer three engineering education programs of Togliatti State University earned international accreditation from the Engineering Education Association in Russia (EEAR). As a result of the extensive accreditation procedure Togliatti State University graduates will have more opportunities for job placement.

In July Mikhail Krishtal was elected the Rector of Togliatti State University.

In 2009 TSU opened recruitment of new students for 12 master degree programs for the first time.

Presently, Togliatti State University is the largest education institution and science center in the city (within the last five years 439 research and development works, with 410 ordered ones among them, were implemented in the University). Togliatti State University takes a very active part in social life of the city, the region and the country.

15 September - two unique scientific forums opened in the University: The IV International School “Physical Material Science" and the 48th Conference “Critical Matters of Strength” commemorating the outstanding scientist Mikhail Aronovich Krishtal, Doctor of Engineering, Professor, and an Honored Figure in Science and Technology of the RSFSR. At the conference the book “Professor M.A. Krishtal and His Academic School” was presented to the participants. It contains his friends and colleagues’ memories and was specially published for the event. Among the participants there were scientists and researchers who came to pay their respect from Togliatti, Samara, Orenburg, Moscow, Belgorod, Nizhny Novgorod, St. Petersburg, Tomsk, Tambov, Yekaterinburg, as well as from Belarus and Ukraine.

At the same time, the IV International School “Physical Material Science” where leading physicists of metals of Russia and Ukraine delivered a series of lectures on nanomaterials, and perspective construction materials research methodology and structure.

25-27 September - the II International Environmental Congress “Ecology and Life Protection of Industrial-Transport Complexes ELPIT-2009”. Scientists from different countries, representatives of major Togliatti institutions and companies, regional and municipal government members convened to discuss matters of environment protection. All the participants, among whom there were biologists and engineers, economists and businessmen, politicians and professors, highly rated the level of the Congress.

8 and 21 October - Togliatti State University was visited by Stanislav Naumov, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, and Vladimir Miklushevsky, Deputy Minister of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. Within the framework of the visit S.Naumov informed about the launch of a program for preparing specialists for high-technology industrial companies. Also S.Naumov offered young scientists to participate in internship programs in Germany. The visitors found the “Privolzhsky Cluster University “Automotive Industry” project particularly interesting and approved new workplaces arrangements and diagnostic equipment developed by Togliatti State University scientists.

18 October - the national stage of the “Formula Student-2009 car race took place in Sosnovka. Teams from such major institutes as Moscow State Automobile and Road Technical Institute, Moscow Automobile Institute, and Togliatti State University participated in the race. On the first day the cars were exhibited at the front porch of Togliatti State University, on the second day they were inspected before the race, and the next day the teams met on the car track in Sosnovka.

20 October - a new building of Togliatti State University Representative Office in Syzran was opened.

27-28 November - The National Scientific and Technical Conference “Scientific Researches in Automotive Industry” with science school elements for young researchers was held by Togliatti State University.

In December Togliatti State University became one of the five institutes in Russia whose students participated in a meeting with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Also, in December Togliatti State University professors and students took part in the National Youth Forum of Winners “Break-Through” (in Moscow).

December was also noteworthy for establishing the first Samara Region department of the Russian Union of Journalists based in Togliatti State University.
