Togliatti State University was established on May 29, 2001 as a result of a merger of two Higher Education Institutions: Togliatti Polytechnic Institute and Togliatti Branch of Samara State Pedagogical University.
The history of Togliatti State University is inseparably linked to the recent history of our city, as it was the first Higher Educational Establishment founded in Togliatti.
In 1950s the biggest hydroelectric power plant “Zhigulevskaya” was being constructed and there was urgent demand in highly qualified experts. Thus, a part-time study department of Kuibyshev Industrial Institute was opened in Stavropol (the name of the city up to 1964)
In 1966 a new stage in the University’s history began. It was connected with construction of Volzhskiy Automotive Plant (AVTOVAZ). The branch of Kuibyshev Industrial Institute was reorganized into Togliatti Polytechnic Institute with Automotive Department, which provided engineering, constructing and research work for AVTOVAS.
In 1980s the fast growing industrial city faced the problem of school and kindergarten teacher shortage. Thus, in 1988 Togliatti Branch of Samara Pedagogical Institute was opened in the city. Its professors developed a unique “kindergarten-school- university” complex, which ensures succession of academic programs at all the stages of education. Five thousand qualified teachers were trained in Togliatti Branch of Samara Pedagogical Institute. Alexey Nemov – the star of the Olympics constellation and the world sport legend- is among its graduates.
Over its 50-year history the University has developed into a diverse higher educational establishment, taking the leading position in training qualified specialists in Samara region. Today Togliatti State University offers undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate education in 63 degree awarding programmes in the fields of Humanities, Technologies, Engineering, Construction, Education, Law, Economics, Sciences, and Arts.
