The university is leading the way in traditional academic areas from Material Science and Physics to Engineering, Chemistry, and the Humanities, as well as in ultramodern disciplines like Nanotechnology, and Energy Efficiency. Togliatti State University hosts around 15 conferences and scientific schools annually.
In 2001 the Research and Development Center was established at TSU in order to accumulate resources and talent. It coordinates the work of all the laboratories and scientific schools, integrates research activity into study process, significantly increases the number of research projects and grants, and improves the quality of research. The Center’s structure currently incorporates:
- 16 research laboratories;
- 4 research centers;
- 12 research and academic centers.
The total funding of research work and development projects for the year 2009 was 2,125 million Euros (85 million rubbles) and 3.2 million Euros (130 million rubles) in 2010. TSU is currently running over 150 projects. The major ones are:
- “Development of Research Potential of Higher Education” (2009 – 2011) within analytical target program of the Ministry of Education and Science;
- “Research and Academic Personnel of Innovative Russia” (2009 – 2013) within the federal target program;
- 3 projects funded by Russian Fundamental Research Foundation.
In 2006 the Testing Center of Togliatti State University was established to serve the needs of local and regional companies and enterprises in research, expert assessment and testing. This is the only certified center in Togliatti authorized to conduct independent third-party testing.
The synthesis of teaching and research is fundamental to Togliatti State University and we strive to create a research-centered academic environment. TSU actively promotes the value and outcomes of its diverse research activities in many ways, including publications, such as the university research magazines Vector of Science and Vestnik of the Institute of Humanities.
The university Center for Technology Transfer serves as a bridge between TSU faculty and researchers and the business community. Through comprehensive technology transfer, innovations may be incorporated into products and services that directly benefit society, as well as research and education at TSU. The center also supports economic growth by forging closer ties with industry and launching new ventures based on TSU's technology. In 2010 eleven innovative spin-offs were established by TSU.
Togliatti State University offers 41 PhD programs in Engineering, Natural Science, the Humanities, Law, Economics, and Teaching, which train prospective scholars to become highly skilled and innovative researchers. TSU offers a wide range of research opportunities allowing PhD students and young scientists to undertake in-depth research and remain at the forefront of discovery. The recent grant of 4 million Euros awarded by the Russian government for establishment of state-of-the-art laboratory Physics of Strength and Intelligent Diagnosis Systems will give a vigorous impulse to research in the field of material science
